After six seasons, a lot of sassy quotes, and two different homes (on Fox and Hulu), The Mindy Project is gearing up to say goodbye. With only a few episodes left before the series ends, creator Mindy Kaling is ready to reveal what fans can expect from the series finale, and closure is on the menu.
Don’t worry, Kaling — who not only plays the show’s lead, Dr. Mindy Lahiri, but also writes and produces the comedy — didn’t give away the ending, but she did recently tell Glamour what her focus was for the last hurrah.
“I love TV series finales. It’s always the episode that everyone tunes in for, even if you’ve lost track of the show for a bit,” Kaling told Glamour this month. “I remember loving the Friends finale because I had stopped watching in college, but the dynamic of the cast was so amazing it was like I had never stopped watching.”
As for what shows she turned to for inspiration on The Mindy Project’s series finale, Kaling couldn’t really narrow it down, but she did tease that it’s funny. Like you’d expect anything less from The Office alum?
“I don’t know that I drew any direct inspiration from any single show for our finale, but I know [executive producer] Matt [Warburton] and I wanted people to watch it and feel closure, but in an unexpected way,” she explained. “We also wanted it to be incredibly cinematic and romantic. And funny, of course! Funny first, always.”
Funny first, we can get on board with that! What do you hope to see on The Mindy Project finale? Are there any storylines you want to see come together?
