It’s been 10 years since Wizards of Waverly Place first aired on Disney Channel, and we can’t help but feel like we need more from the Russo family. The good news is that the series creator is totally on board for a movie reunion, and more.
Even though it’s only been five years since we said goodbye to Selena Gomez as Alex Russo and her two hilarious brothers, David Henrie (as Justin Russo) and Jake T. Austin (Max Russo), fans are ready for a revival of any sort. In honor of the Disney Channel show’s 10th Anniversary, creator Todd J. Greenwald chatted with Seventeen.com about the future of everyone’s favorite wizard family.
Greenwald admitted that he has two reboot ideas, the first being a “grown-up theatrical version” of the original series. “Production value is ultimately what I’m going for. It’s something that you wouldn’t expect to see out of a Disney-inspired show,” Greenwald told Seventeen.com. He went onto describe this ideas as, “a high-budget, Harry Potter-esque movie.”
It sounds magical (get it?) don’t you think?
As for the second reboot idea, Greenwald envisions a TV series that would be a prequel to the original show. According to the creator, it would follow Jerry Russo (who was originally played by David DeLuise) back when he was a teen at WizTech. Even though this version wouldn’t have the original cast, he would like to have the character of Alex included in some way.
“The twist for me would probably be Alex taking over somebody’s mind. Maybe she would become her own mother, which would be really weird, because she knows she has to control certain things,” he explained. “So even though Alex isn’t in it, we know as an audience that she is in the body of one of the characters throughout the series, which would be cool.”
