Season 6 of Chicago Fire is well underway, and there are some big changes coming down the line. In fact, the show’s creator just teased a big life change that will affect more than one character.
As Chicago Fire fans know, Matthew Casey (played by Jesse Spencer) has been promoted from Lieutenant to Captain. According to Fire creator, Derek Haas, this change in title is definitely going impact numerous characters, including his friends on Truck 81.
“What makes that [promotion] even more interesting is Casey [will be] outranking Severide for the first time in the show,” showrunner Haas told TVLine about the new promotion this season. “And what that’ll mean going forward is something we’re going to play out over the course of Season 6.”
Throughout the past six seasons, Casey and Kelly Severide (played by Taylor Kinney) have been equals who are pretty much on an equal playing field, so with Casey outranking his best friend, things are about to get interesting.
“It’s something that [Dawson] wants for him,” Haas explained to TVLine earlier this month. “She thinks that him getting promoted and getting up to chief means a lot more behind-the-desk [work] and standing outside of incidents instead of running into burning buildings.”
We will have to wait and see exactly how much Casey’s new role alters his relationships on the series, but for now it’s an exciting character plot, and we are all for it.
Chicago Fire airs on Thursdays on NBC.
