American Idol will return this spring to a new network, with new judges, and according to Katy Perry, a whole new approach to helping the contestants out.

After Fox aired its final episode of the long-running reality series in April 2016, fans thought they’d never get a revival of American Idol, but they were wrong. It’s coming back in 2018 to ABC, and Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie will all be there to judge. As for what type of judge Perry will be, she won’t be the Simon Cowell of the group, even though he is her favorite.

Perry told Variety that this group of judges is all “about giving constructive criticism.” That being said, the “Dark Horse” singer will take into consideration how impressionable and sensitive the youth of the show will be, which is why she plans to focus more on the positives than the negatives.

“Young kids take things to heart. I can be sarcastic as all get out, and even a little snarky. Like Simon, I’m also a truth-teller, a straight shooter,” she explained. “But at the end of the day, I’m not here to tell anyone they suck. It’s not about that.”

In addition to being more positive as a whole, Perry admitted that despite the show’s revival being much sooner than anyone anticipated, she thinks the timing couldn’t be better for the singing competition.

“The show is coming back at a perfect time,” Perry said. “There’s just too much choice out there. You don’t know who to focus on.”

Luckily, Perry and her fellow judges will be there this spring to narrow down that pool of contestants, nurture them, and maybe give them some tough love along the way. Either way, we can’t wait to watch it all unfold.

American Idol premieres on March 11, 2018 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
