Shawn Mendes is a big fan of John Mayer, previously naming him as a dream collaborator, and now that dream has finally come true… well, almost. The two have shared a stage, but have yet to create an original track together.
While attending the 2017 American Music Awards, Mendes talked with Billboard about the day that he finally got to share the stage with Mayer earlier this year in Toronto. Of course, like all of us, Mendes had a bit of a fan moment when working with someone he has looked up to for so long.
“He’s the coolest person in the world, first of all,” Mendes told Billboard about Mayer. “He was so calm and I was freaking out and he was like, ‘Dude, it’s going to be fine, we’re going to be fine, we got this.’ And I’m like ‘I don’t got this John, I really don’t got this!’”
After meeting the “Gravity” singer, Mendes isn’t sure when the two will work together again — or if they’ll ever write together — but he isn’t ruling out a reunion with his “mentor.”
“We’ve become really good friends. I kind of consider him a mentor of mine… but I think so,” the Canadian singer told the publication when asked if the two would work together again in the future. “We’re never in the same place at the same time but I think we will.”
Over the years Mendes has shared the stage with a lot of big names — like when he recently brought Ed Sheeran on stage at one of his concerts — and he loves to collaborate with amazing artists, so fingers crossed with get a Mendes and Mayer duet somewhere in the future.
