Psych-Os, can you feel it? Psych: The Movie is just around the corner, and now we know why it was the right time to bring back the hilarious duo of Shawn Spencer and Burton “Gus” Guster.
This week, James Roday (who plays Shawn) and Dulé Hill (who plays Gus) stopped by Entertainment Weekly: The Show and talked all about their series, Psych, which originally ran for eight seasons on USA and is coming back this month in TV movie form. When asked how it all came about, the duo said it was just “the right time,” and fans couldn’t agree more.
“From the time the show ended the Psych fans have been engaged in the show. They’ve been saying how they wanted more. They wanted a Psych movie, or a Psych special,” Hill told Entertainment Weekly.
It was the fans’ support and outcry paired with USA Network’s belief in the show and idea that someday the psychic detective duo would reunite that paved the way for everything to line up in 2017.
“Chris McCumber, who’s the president of USA Network, when he announced the show was finishing he said, I’m sure this is not the end of Shawn and Gus and their adventures,” Hill recalled. “So, the timing, this now was the right time where we hadn’t been away for too long, but it also wasn’t too short.”
Roday pipped in adding, “You don’t want to get too cute.” Hill finished the thought by saying, “We were in the sweet spot to come back and toss up a nice little nugget for the Psych fans.”
A 2017 TV movie is definitely the “sweet spot” for a revival of the long-running series, which took place in Santa Barbara and featured too many hilarious nicknames of Gus (given by Shawn of course), and Psych-Os couldn’t be more excited to see these two back in action.
Psych: The Movie airs on December 7, 2017 at 8 p.m. on USA.
