Grown-ish is not your typical college-based TV series, and the new show’s stars, Yara Shahidi and Francia Raisa can prove it.

In case you don’t already know, ABC’s black-ish is getting a spinoff on Freeform called grown-ish and it’s all about Zoey Johnson (played by Shahidi) as she goes to college and deals with all of those typical — and yet unique — first-year experiences. According to Shahidi and her co-star Raisa, who plays Zoey’s Cuban Republican roommate Ana, this isn’t your average college show, and that’s a good thing.

“I feel pretty darn lucky about the cast we’ve been able to create and just our relationship because that really shows through,” Shahidi told Entertainment Weekly in an exclusive interview about what makes grown-ish stand out.

As for Raisa, she revealed that although the comedy touches upon issues that every college show does, like sex, studying, drugs and more, it is much more relatable to today’s college students.

“I grew up in the Saved by the Bell/90210 era, and this comedy is so different. I know that was high school, but even when they went to college, they were more focused on the love triangles. This show has that too, but it goes beyond that,” Raisa told EW. “I’ve never seen a show that’s been so involved in today’s world, meaning politics — people’s views are seen and heard. I’ve personally learned so much from it. I think this show really portrays why it’s important to be involved in our society.”

While grown-ish will be much more in touch with today’s world, it will definitely have its fair share of college drama, love, and of course friendships with a lot of comedic moments to make both fans of black-ish and new viewers come back for more each week.

Grown-ish premieres on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 8 p.m. on Freeform.
