Maia Mitchell Says Sweet Goodbye To ‘The Fosters’ And Its Fans

The Fosters is officially ending after its fifth season, but it’s not all sad news for fans of the show, or for the series’ lead Maia Mitchell, who will be getting a spinoff series.

This week, Freeform announced that The Fosters would be ending after season 5. The remaining episodes will begin airing next week, to be capped off by a three-part series finale this summer. The 3 hour series conclusion will set up the spin off, giving fans a glimpse into what’s to come from the 13-episode offshoot, Deadline reported.

The good news is that the spinoff will star Mitchell and Cierra Ramirez, as their characters move to Los Angeles and try to manage their lives and careers while living together. The bad news is that we have to say goodbye to The Fosters, and Mitchell is already getting prepared for the bittersweet farewell.

“Dear Fosters fans, there’s a lot I want to say so bear with me. Firstly, I want to say thank you. I am so proud of our show and the stories we’ve been able to tell and the people we’ve been able to touch, but none of that is possible without your full hearted support,” Mitchell tweeted on Wednesday (Jan. 3) after the cancelation news broke. “Your loyalty means the world to all of us at The Fosters and we are truly grateful to every single one of you.”

Despite having to leave behind The Fosters, the Australian actress couldn’t be more proud of what she and her cast mates have accomplished since the show began back in 2013.

“Sometimes great things come to an end, but to have achieved five seasons and over one hundred episodes with the most supportive, loving, talented and professional cast and crew is more than I could have dreamed of and for that I am so grateful,” she continued.

While The Fosters is over — having already filmed their series finale — Mitchell is excited for the next chapter of her journey with Freeform, and to see where her character Callie goes next.

“This show and its fans have become home to me so it’s a truly bitter-sweet moment. Moving forward, I am especially grateful to @FreeformTV for their commitment to keep the characters and the spirit of the show alive,” she wrote. “It’s with a full heart that I start a new chapter with my on and off screen sister, @cierraramirez. We’re excited to see where Callie and Mariana take us next… 👯💕.”

This truly is bittersweet, but at least there are more episodes of The Fosters left to air, and a spinoff already in the works!

The Fosters returns on January 9, 2018 on Freeform.
