On Wednesday (Jan. 3), Witherspoon confirmed the news that her company Hello Sunshine would be bringing to life the thriller drama Are You Sleeping, based on Kathleen Barber’s book by the same name, which was loosely based on the podcast Serial.
“Excited to start working with the talented Nichelle Tramble on #AreYouSleeping! This show for @Apple, starring the extraordinary actress @OctaviaSpencer, is based on an incredible crime thriller by @Katelizabee! 2018 is already looking like fun! ✨” she wrote on social media.
According to Deadline, Are You Sleeping will air on Apple TV and will not only star The Help actress Octavia Spencer, but she will also be one of the show’s executive producers. The other executive producers will include Witherspoon, Nichelle Tramble (who is the creator and writer on the series), Lauren Neustadter, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Kristen Campo.
Are You Sleeping the TV series will be a show about a book about a podcast, and it already has such a massive fan base that this next incarnation of the story is bound to get a great response. In case you haven’t read the book, or listened to Serial, here’s basically what you need to know… the series, like the book, is fictional, and focuses on the fallout that happens after a podcast stirs up questions about a murder case, which eventually leads to it being reopened. It will give fans another glimpse into true-crime podcasts, and what really can happen when the public gets involved with criminal cases, justice, and the legal system behind it all.
Considering the success of Big Little Lies, we cannot wait to see what Reese has in store for us with Are You Sleeping.
