Times Up and the Golden Globe Awards know it! On Sunday (Jan. 7), Hollywood’s finest hit the red carpet for the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards and they made a huge statement, with both their style and their speeches.
Celebrities joined together to celebrate one another and their collective career accomplishments, and drive home—in a big way—that the world is finally changing, that women everywhere are empowered like never before, and that gender and racial inequality and mistreatment will no longer be tolerated. Throughout the night, we witnessed a true shift in Hollywood with one amazing speech after another, revealing a palpable solidarity amongst the stars, men and women alike—which made for an unforgettable start to the 2018 red carpet season.
See the best moments and the stars that really made an impact at this year’s Golden Globes below.
1. All dressed in black, and ready to go!
Before the show even started, the stars hit the red carpet and were dressed to impress. Unlike a typical red carpet however, there was just one color to be seen… black. Yes, everyone was dressed in black in honor of the #TIMESUP movement, and each actor’s style was more unique and beautiful than the one before them — and their bold statement to support the end of sexual assault, harassment and discrimination in the workplace even more powerful.
2. Seth Meyers gets the crowd laughing.
The Late Night With Seth Meyers host took his Golden Globe hosting duties very seriously—or rather, he took the jokes he told very seriously, and the audience was more than ready for it. As was to be expected, he didn’t pull any punches, and every joke was very well received. One of his best moments was when he brought his talkshow segment, “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell” into the monologue and had some of the celebs in the audience tell his punchlines. Of course, Amy Poehler got in on the action, and once again we were reminded that Meyers and Poehler should be together on screen ALL THE TIME.
3. Jennifer Aniston gushes over her co-presenter Carol Burnett.
Jennifer Aniston was all of us when she took the stage with the iconic actress, Carol Burnett, to present Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy. The two had a hilarious chemistry on stage which included Aniston asking to tug on Burnett’s ear (in honor of Burnett’s iconic TV sign off) and Burnett telling the former Friends star, “I’m happy that you’re coming back to television, because Will & Grace was one of my favorite shows.” It was definitely a comedic highlight, and we really wish these two were in a project together right now.
4. There’s a new sisterhood in town.
We all love the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants ladies and their unmistakable love for one another, and now we have another incredible sisterhood to celebrate… the Big Little Lies stars! In addition to winning Best Limited Series or TV Movie, and having Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and Alexander Skarsgård all win their categories, every time one of the celebrated cast members took the stage, or won an award, there was so much genuine love and appreciation for one another, it almost seemed too good to be true! 5. Kelly Clarkson and Keith Urban sing through their presenter duties.
You can’t have an award show without a little music, right? Luckily, when Kelly Clarkson and Keith Urban took the stage as presenters, they teed off the opening of the envelope by singing “And the Golden Globe goes to….” together in perfect harmony. It was brilliant.
6. Sterling K. Brown makes history with his Golden Globes’ win.
The This Is Us actor won Best Actor in a TV Drama, which many critics and fans predicted, but what you might not have known is that with his win, Brown became the first black man to win a Golden Globe for that category—which, needless to say, is a BIG deal. During his speech he also got redemption (remember when he was played off at the Emmys before thanking his wife!?!) and gave a big shoutout to his wife right off the bat. He’s a class act and we can’t wait to see more of him on the upcoming new episodes of This Is Us.
7. Harry Potter wizards reunite.
It might’ve been short and sweet, but for Harry Potter fans, the moment that Emma Watson and Robert Pattinson walked out on stage together made their wizard-loving hearts so happy. Who knew we missed Hermione Granger and Cedric Diggory so much!
8. Oprah knocks it out of the park with her acceptance speech for the Cecile B. deMille award.
From the moment we found out that Oprah Winfrey would be receiving the Cecile B. deMille award, we all knew that her speech was reason alone to tune into this year’s Golden Globes, and surprise, surprise… we were right! In addition to Reese Witherspoon giving the most heartfelt introduction for Oprah, the honorary award recipient stunned everyone — in a good way — from start to finish with her epic speech. She had us at the edge of our seats, eloquently covering everything from the fact that she is the first black woman ever to receive this award; those who helped her along the way and how thankful she is to them; how she values the press now more than ever; the story of Recy Taylor, her thoughts on sexual harassment and assault, and her aspirations for a better world for the young females watching her right now. It was chill-inducing and practically perfect, and the internet is now ablaze with ‘Oprah 2020’ speculation and aspiration. Coincidence? I guess we’ll find out soon enough… either way, she basically coined her campaign slogan when she declared “A new day is on the horizon!”
“I want all the girls watching to know here and now that a new day is on the horizon,” she said at one point. “And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are in this room here tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, making sure they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘me too’ again!”
Seriously, we could listen to Oprah’s empowering and eloquent speech on repeat all day, and never get bored. She is one of a kind!
