Riverdale is dark, twisted and already a massive fan-favorite for The CW, so when it was announced that the series would be getting a spinoff focused on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, TV fans rejoiced. Now, the spinoff has found its Sabrina Spellman and she fits the role perfectly.
Netflix has officially tapped Kiernan Shipka to play Sabrina Spellman in their adaptation of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic, and it’s a magical fit!
“We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list,” executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said in a press release via Entertainment Weekly. “This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”
Like Riverdale, which was also created by Aguirre-Sacasa, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will take the comics you know and dive even deeper and darker into their storylines. In fact, Shipka will be setting out to play a Sabrina very different than the one that Melissa Joan Hart portrayed in Sabrina the Teenage Witch. This Sabrina will be much closer related to the comic and have the witch beginning her dark education as a sorceress, while trying to be a normal sophomore at Baxter High, EW notes, and it’s going to be a wicked good show.
Shipka first entered our radar when she played the adorable Sally Draper on Mad Men, and as she grew up both on and off screen, it’s become clear that she’s an incredible actress with a lot of versatility, which she will certainly need in order to pull of such a complicated character.
“I am thrilled that Kiernan is playing Sabrina and have no doubt that she will embody the strength, courage, and boldness that has made the character a fan favorite,” executive producer and Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater added, and we couldn’t agree more.
Are you ready for Shipka to take on Sabrina Spellman and her dark side? We sure are! Until then, we will watch Riverdale, the series that made way for this Netflix spinoff, on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
