‘Modern Family’ Bosses Tease End Of Series And Possible Spinoff Idea

It’s been nine years of comedy and family gold on Modern Family, and sadly it all may be coming to an end very soon — well, soon-ish.

Ahead of its 200th episode — yes, Modern Family will now have 200 episodes to its name — the show’s co-creators talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the end of the ABC comedy, and whether or not a spinoff could happen. While ABC has already picked up Modern Family for a 10th season (it is currently in season nine), the showrunners are pretty confident that it won’t go past that point.

“Our plan is to end it at 10. If we can leave with most of our audience wanting more, I think that’s the right way to do it,” co-creator Steve Levitan told The Hollywood Reporter. “Never say never, but I just can’t imagine that we’d go past that.”

Although a spinoff is not in the works as of now, the showrunners admitted that they’ll revisit the idea once the series finale is closer. Right now, anything spinoff related is on the back burner, and there haven’t been an “substantive conversations about [it].”

As for what the series finale will look like, the showrunners have started to think about it, but only in a grand sense. Nothing has been finalized, but they are thinking about it.

“We went through these questions on Frasier, when we brought that around after 11 seasons and sort of said, ‘Well, the Shakespearean route on that is a birth, a death or a wedding,’ and we managed to effectively do all three in the final episode,” co-creator Christopher Lloyd said. “So it may be some conversation that starts there, but we haven’t figured out the episode we’re doing three weeks from now. It’s just a little over a year and a half from now. We’ve got time to think about that.”

For now, the cast and creators are just celebrating the fact that their 200th episode airs tonight, January 10, 2018 on ABC.
