Ashley Tisdale will always be a Disney darling, which is why you might not have seen her on screen lately.
Although Tisdale has continued her career post-High School Musical, by voicing characters on TV series like Ginger Snaps and Skylanders Academy, her main focus has been behind the scenes, heading up her own production company Blondie Girl Productions and that’s not by accident.
Tisdale recently sat down with Seventeen and opened up about how hard it is to shake her Disney persona on film. The good news is that the actress isn’t giving up on playing roles herself, but when you do see her next, it won’t be in a Sharpay-style role.
“Right now, my goal in acting is to do roles that people haven’t seen me do before and kind of push the boundaries with that. Obviously, those are the roles that people just don’t see me in,” Tisdale told Seventeen about her dream role. “It’s so funny how someone sees you as a certain character and then they just can’t see you as anything else.”
This issue is why Tisdale has created her production company, which produced Freeform’s Young & Hungry and just wrapped a movie about Daphne and Velma from Scooby Doo.
“Which is why I’m so happy and proud that I have my production company because I’m able to create anything,” she continued to say after noting how hard it is to escape her Sharpay character. “Having writers, being able to have the ideas, and say I’m going to create this.”
While her main focus is on the production side of entertainment, Tisdale does have a few roles of her own coming up. She is guest-starring on MacGyver this year as well as an episode of Milo Murphy’s Law, so keep an eye out.
