While we already know that the spinoff series is set in the future, with both Callie (Mitchell) and Mariana (Ramirez) living in Los Angeles as young adults, the two actresses hadn’t talked about what we can expect from their show, until now.
“We found out the show was ending, and they were like, ‘Do you want to keep the story alive?’ We were like, ‘Yeah, in whatever way we can. Let’s figure it out.’ They came up with a way for us to do that,” Mitchell told TVLine at the first-ever Freeform Summit last week. “There are going to be appearances from all your Fosters favorites, so it’s not just going to be our show. There are going to be new series regulars and new characters, and still the same amount of representation as we’ve had on The Fosters, and the same topics. It’s [the] same but different.”
While the characters will be the same – at least Callie and Mariana – the new show will focus more on adult problems and issues, which the two actresses are ready to take on.
“I think the mistakes that our characters make are going to be different. They’re going to be skewed older, I think,” Mitchell explained. “Cierra was just saying how our characters are doing something, and we’re like, ‘Why would they do that?’ And then you have to remember, ‘Oh, they’re 17 and 16.’ Now we won’t have those excuses.”
Ramirez is confident that although they won’t be making mistakes like 16 year olds do, they will have their own set of struggles, which will be handled in a very relatable way. “But I’m sure we’re going to find some down the road. It’s messy growing up,” she said. “I have so many issues, so I can only imagine what Mariana and Callie will have.”
The Fosters final season airs on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on Freeform.
