Freeform’s newest series is taking your love of mermaids and going dark… scary dark, and we’re totally here for it.
This spring, Freeform will be adding Siren to its lineup, and if you’ve ever been a fan of mermaids, and dark tales, then this might be the perfect show for you. Although traditionally mermaids come off as pretty creatures of the sea – take The Little Mermaid for example – the cast of Siren promise a “different” kind of mermaid story, so you’ve been warned.
“It is scary, but I think, you know, a great white is scary yet majestic… I’m a bit in that category I think,” Alex Roe, who plays a marine biologist on the show, told Entertainment Tonight at the first-ever Freeform Summit last week.
Siren is set in the coastal town of Bristol Cove, which is known for being a mermaid haven, but the mermaids who are said to live there are darker than your typical mermaids… they have fangs and claws!
“It is a very different side [of mermaids], but only because it’s looking a little bit more at it realistically in the sense that they are predators that have to survive in the ocean… there’s a certain level, for lack of a better word, badass-ness that has to come with that,” Eline Powell, who plays the lead explained.
The show follows the life of Ryn (played by Powell), who is a mysterious girl that turns up in Bristol Cove and sets the whole town on edge and wreaks a lot of havoc. A team of marine biologists must try and figure out what drove Ryn to land, and if there really are more indviduals like her out there.
“The things that the creatures [are] capable of is pretty scary,” Roe said. “Once you’re in their territory, it’s kind of like the gloves are off.” As for who Ryn really is, Powell added that she’s “a little bit more animalistic than the Little Mermaid but that doesn’t necessarily mean she isn’t as lovely.”
To see what happens when a mermaid-obsessed town actually comes into contact with a creature of myth, check out Siren and its two-hour premiere this spring.
Siren premieres on March 29, 2018 on Freeform.
