In 2016, Castle abruptly came to an end after eight seasons, and now Stana Katic is speaking out about what really went down on set.
While fans were surprised to see the ABC series — which was about a mystery writer named Richard “Rick” Castle who teamed up with a real NYPD homicide detective Kate Beckett, who was played by Katic — the cast was even more thrown by the decision.
“I’m actually still not clear on the thought process behind the way that it went down. It hurt and it was a harsh ending,” Katic told Entertainment Weekly recently when talking about Castle’s end.
At the time that Castle ended, there were rumors that Katic had a toxic relationship with her co-star Nathan Fillion, who played Rick Castle, and that her relationship with the show had soured near the end. Now that it’s been a few years, she has come to terms with the fact that she was lucky to be on such a big hit for so long, no matter how it concluded.
“Nearly two years later… I met so many beautiful people on that project, and we collaborated on something really unique in that it’s not every day that you get a show, or a series, that has eight seasons and that it was a hit for the network,” she explained to the publication.
Although it was a bittersweet goodbye, Katic, who has a new Amazon series called Absentia now, is happy with what both her and the rest of the cast accomplished in the series’ eight seasons.
“It would be a disservice to those people, to the work that we did together, and to my work, which I feel contributed, in part, to the success of the show, to be anything but grateful because, at the end of the day, that was a fantastic platform,” she continued. “It was a formative experience, and we told a love story that I feel moved people, touched people, and I can’t be anything but glad that I was a part of something like that. I hope it remains something special in viewers’ minds forever.”
Even though we will always love the dynamic of Rick Castle and Kate Beckett on screen, and we miss Castle, we’re happy that Katic has come full circle on its ending.
