Chandra Wilson Addresses ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Exit Rumors

Grey’s Anatomy fans are not ready to lose another original character, so what’s going on with all these rumors of Chandra Wilson’s Dr. Miranda Bailey exiting the show? The actress herself is opening up about those rumors, and it’s not all good news.

After a promo for this week’s episode of Grey’s teased that Dr. Bailey was going to have a heart attack, fans had a few emotional heart attacks of their own. Is Bailey leaving? Is she going to be okay? Well, she’s stressed, and we get that, but according to Wilson it’s not all bad.

“Let’s say Bailey has been stressed,” Wilson told Entertainment Weekly about this week’s episode. “Is Bailey leaving? I think this is the right thing to say: Bailey’s been stressed and needs to take care of herself.”

Okay, this isn’t necessarily clearing things up, but at least it’s not a definite goodbye for Bailey. Instead, Wilson revealed that when her character’s husband decides to become a firefighter—giving way for the Station 19 spinoff series—Bailey will be pushed to her limits.

“Bailey doesn’t like unstable ground. She likes to know what’s happening next and what’s going to happen after that,” she explained. “Even though she would never begrudge someone the opportunity to expand and to explore and be their best self, she still likes things to be consistent, so she’s not very happy with her husband, and not being able to express that unhappiness coupled with the normal stresses of the position that she’s been in, that’s a lot on her plate.”

While we’re not clear on what will happen to Bailey—all signs are pointing to her surviving the heart attack for now—Wilson teased that the episode will give fans more insight into Bailey’s childhood.

“There are things that get revealed in this episode about Bailey’s upbringing that make you understand the person that you’ve been seeing since the pilot,” Wilson said. “Where she’s coming from, why she behaves the way she behaves, the kind of relationships that she has with her family, the kind of relationships she has with patients, the driven, professional woman that she is—you get a glimpse of where the seed of her comes from.”

Fingers crossed Bailey lives to see way more than one more episode, and that she doesn’t leave Grey’s Anatomy anytime soon.

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
