Grey’s Anatomy is currently in its 14th season and based on its success it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and neither is its lead Ellen Pompeo. When it comes to other acting gigs, however, Pompeo isn’t exactly sure she’s willing to give it a shot.
While Pompeo has already signed a two-year deal with ABC Studios, which would lock her into a season 15 and season 16 of Grey’s, assuming it gets picked up for two more seasons, the veteran TV actress has hinted that once the show wraps she’s more excited to stay behind the camera.
“Producing and directing is where I’m challenged and where I’m learning,” Pompeo told Deadline in January, hinting that Grey’s could be the end of her acting career. “Acting, I don’t know. If the right role comes along, and it’s interesting, then never say never, but I do have three kids. I don’t necessarily want to travel around. I wouldn’t say it’s my burning desire to go act in something else.”
Despite the fact that Pompeo doesn’t have a so-called desire to keep going as an actress, she loves being on Grey’s and within the Shondaland world, which is why her latest deal with ABC includes her as a producer beginning halfway through this season on Grey’s and a co-executive producer on Station 19.
This means that even when Grey’s does wrap up, and we finally have to bid farewell to Meredith Grey that Pompeo will still be a part of the show’s legacy with its spinoff, even if it’s not in an acting capacity.
Either way, Grey’s isn’t over, so we don’t have to panic about Pompeo’s possible acting retirement just yet!
Grey’s Anatomy airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
